Appropriation (lat. appropriatio, von appropriare, „erwerben, (sich) aneignen, zu eigen machen“) bezeichnet die Aneignung sowohl von Sachen, also den Erwerb eines Eigentums, als auch die Aneignung im philosophisch-geisteswissenschaftlichen Sinne.

Speziell bezeichnet Appropriation

• in der Soziologie einen sozialen Prozess der Aneignung als Quelle für Eigentum, siehe Appropriation (Soziologie)
• im Lehnsrecht den Erwerb eines Lehens durch den ursprünglichen Lehnsnehmer (lat. appropriatio feudi)
• in der Theologie Thomas von Aquins die Zuordnung eines der Wesensattribute der Dreifaltigkeit (Macht, Weisheit, Gutheit) zu einer ihrer drei Personen
• in der bildenden Kunst das bewusste Kopieren oder Imitieren eines anderen Künstlers, siehe Appropriation Art

Abweichend davon wird die »Aneignung herrenlosen Gutes« als Okkupation bezeichnet.
